Park natural Serra de Sao Mamede The Natural Park Serra de São Mamede is a protected nature reserve of some 31000 hectares in the northeastern tip of Alentejo on the border of Portugal and Spain: much overlooked but still so easy to reach from the new Lisbon to Madrid highway.
The 44km long park, created in 1989, with the aim of protecting wildlife and unusual plants and preserving local traditional life.
The park contrasts with the rolling plains of grain and oak that typifies the Alentejo. Within this protected region, the mountain range known as the Serra de São Mamede at 1025 meters overlooks the vast plains of the Alentejo and into Extremadura in Spain.
The convergence of the Mediterranean and Atlantic climates has given rise to a fascinating range of natural vegetation and wild life. Wild flowers are abundant in the spring and early summer. The forest of cork oaks, oaks and olive trees still covers large areas of the Serra.
Castle Marvao Marvão is a spectacular medieval walled village perched almost 900 meters high the highest village of Portugal, on a rocky crest. The steep and narrow cobbled streets lined with immaculately whitewashed houses wind their way up to an impressive fortress dating from the late 13th century, which offers a stunning 360-degree panorama view. Marvão is definitely one of Portugal's most spectacular fortified villages.
Castelo de Vide The Spanish Extremadura is extraordinary, a forgotten treasure of Spain and one of the last great rural expanses in Western Europe. Evidence of occupation by the Romans, Visigoths, Moors, and Christian conquistadores survives virtually undisturbed.
Extremaduras towns and villages lie far apart and this gives rise to the individual character of each settlement. History is everywhere: prehistoric dolmens, Roman theatres, amphitheatres, aqueducts, reservoirs, bridges, Moorish and Christian castles almost untouched throughout their history. Then you find Man’s footprint on the rural landscape: ancient terraced olive groves, vineyards, and the typical “Dehesa” which is the name given to these expansive areas of farmland consisting of groves of low density, mature oak trees. The spaces between the trees are used to cultivate cereals and as pasture for grazing livestock. Around 50% of the land of Extremadura, these Dehesas take up a region to the west of Spain bordering with Portugal.
