The Normandy region & Grandmesnil area There is a wealth of history in the area, from the Landing Beaches to William the Conqueror's castle. Summer temperatures here are generally warmer than in England, and the hour in advace makes the evenings light until after ten p.m.
The market at St.Pierre sur Dives( 10 minutes by car) is the largest in the area and is held on Monday morning, and the Saturday market at Falaise is well worth a visit. There are many antiques fairs and " vide greniers" , which are like a car boot sale, held in the surrounding towns and villages at weekends.
Grandmesnil is a small village nestling at the bottom of a ridge. There are no shops in the village, but Trun ( 5 minutes by car) has shops, bars and a supermarket. Larger supermarkets can be found at Argentan and Falaise, both about 15 minutes by car.
Argentan has a direct rail link to Paris, and a day trip to the capital is a great day out. There are impressive firework displays held locally and all the local villages hold their own "fete.
