Basilicata is a mountainous and arid region of Italy which does not see much rain. It has two coastlines, one in the middle of the Gulf of Taranto on the Ionian Sea, and a smaller one on the Tyrrhenian Sea, with the famous sea resort of Maratea. The bare mountain landscapes of Basilicata roll down to the Ionian Sea but parts are quite rugged.
The region is rich in archaeological sites dating back to Greek and Roman times. The style of architecture ranges from Romanesque to Arab Byzantine with some Baroque, evident of a Neapolitan influence.
The whole region is also full of Roman and Greek ruins and there are some wonderful ruins, especially in the National Archaeological of Melfi. If you like antiquities and ancient history Basilicata is probably the place to go for a holiday.
